Magical October...

Magical things often happen in October.

Meet Dan de Lion.
A messenger faerie.
If you believe, he will blow your message of love, hope, dreams, or wishes to the one you love on the seeds of a dandelion.
I took me weeks, not months, to finish this new art doll. About three months ago I shared a clay head that I started for this doll when I introduced my Butterfly Elf, Star Catcher.
I was stuck on what kind of a body I wanted to give my new character for quite some time. Originally I was going to use a box for his body but I didn't really like the effect.
Then summer arrived. I took time to plant flowers and relax at the beach. September rolled around and I had a new idea for his body that I wanted to try.
Below are some photos of many, but not all, of the steps I took to complete Dan de Lion.

TA DA!

Do you remember this clay head?
It was one of my newly begun art dolls.

"Sometimes the journey to completing a thing takes longer than you think."

I don't have a plan I just begin to mold the clay.

Then a face begins to emerge. A character, a personality, an attitude.

His ears are pointed. Hum mm, an elf?

Painting begins.

He'll need a body. Wood turnings and dowels

He should have hair.
White, unraveled, stands of yarn hair.
It happens when you handle those lovely bright stars

He should have butterfly wings..
My clever, handy, brother cut wings for him from scrap wood

Clay boots with laces
A clay pocket for safe keeping of stars
And a fashionable star scarf around his neck.

He is a Butterfly Elf  Falling Star Catcher

His lovely wings are glittered on the front
and tell his story on the back
of catching falling stars and
saving them in a pocket
for those rainy days.

He has already caught several falling stars for his rainy day collection.

He wears a hang tag that reads
"Let it shine all the time let it shine."

A finished project!

Speaking of finishing a thing.
A few days ago I took these photos of the sun setting while sitting on my backyard deck.

Day is done, gone the sun, beautifully.

I thought this was quite interesting and gorgeous.

Unfinished...

"Can anything be sadder than work left unfinished?
Yes, work never begun."
Christina Rossetti

I read this quote on another blog. I love it because it helps me to justify all the unfinished projects I have. And not feel one bit guilty for starting new projects.

These are a couple of canvas dolls (from several years ago) I left unfinished...

Work I have just Begun

The beginning of a clay head for an art doll

Now he has ears and a coat of Gesso paint

Is he puckered up for a kiss? Is he blowing his breath out?
Humm...

A second clay head. I'm thinking a little smaller doll.
Perhaps an elf fairy.

He now has a face and ears...

I have some ideas for their bodies and details but I'm not really sure what is going to be next.

My main goal is to not add them to the box with the unfinished canvas dolls.

Have a great summer weekend! Joining up with Pink Saturday. Click here to visit Beverly at How Sweet The Sound

Pink Butterflies...

I've recently moved into a new house. One big change I've made is my desire to hang up wreaths. It seems I have an addiction and I may need to eventually seek help but for now I'm going to enjoy this new pleasure.

I found a simple grapevine wreath at AC Moore's for around $5. I have a collection of butterflies from the dollar store and few other shops.

Voila' a pretty butterfly wreath for the front door.

Another new addiction for me is plants. This is my first orchid.
These lovely globe flowers are not in my garden they are planted outside my dentist's office. I thought they were so pretty and fun to see.
I'm late at posting this to Pink Saturday but other things delayed me. Hope you had a great day and I wish you an even better week!

Missing you...

Hello Dear Blogland Friends,
I've been gone for quite some time and I feel the need to start visiting your blogs. I miss reading your stories and seeing your latest artistic endeavors.

To get back into the swing I think I'll link to Pink Saturday. I know several of you will be there and I'll try to make an effort to visit several blogs to say hello. Thanks to Beverly for hosting this event each and every week for the past 8 years. Happy 8th Year Anniversary Pink Saturday!
The theme this week will be as always with lots of pinks and 8th year anniversary wishes. But I know Beverly will also want to see red, white, and blue to honor Memorial Day.

My red, white, and blue wreath is not my personal design. I saw several posts on Face Book featuring this bandana wreath and thought it was an easy and appropriate decoration for this and a few other holidays and a great way to get me creating again.

Wishing you all a memorable Memorial Day!
